The researchers found that women with breast cancer who have low muscle mass, are less likely to survive on the 2nd and 3rd stages of the disease. The study was published in the scientific journal JAMA Oncology.
For this study a group of researchers from the University of Alberta (Canada) and the Institute Farber cancer compared to patients with low muscle mass when they were diagnosed with breast cancer 2 or 3 stage with women who have muscle wasting (sarcopenia).
In the period from January 2000 to December 2013, the group has wenigerbachtal 3241 women diagnosed with breast cancer. Their muscle and body fat mass was assessed using computed tomography. Research has shown that sarcopenia is observed in one third of women (34%). All of their patients the scientists in charge for six years to perform their survival.
The team of researchers found out that the lower muscle mass leads to lower survival rates in cancer patients. In 34% of women who have observed sarcopenia, almost two times higher probability of death than those who have muscle mass in normal.
In addition, the researchers found that those patients who had the greatest amount of fat, 35% more likely to die than slimmer people. Patients who had higher amounts of fat in combination with sarcopenia were 89% more prone to death.
The researchers suggest that this result may also be interpreted differently, but the women who had bluearena form of cancer, are more likely to die early. While the malignant tumor can lead to loss of muscle mass in the early stages of the disease.
It is likely that those people, who had more muscle mass in the beginning of the study, are also more likely to have experienced the exhaustion of the muscles, and therefore lived longer. The researchers also suspect that women with higher lean mass in General lead a healthy life that increases their chances of survival.
The study authors recommend that women have a healthy weight with adequate muscle mass. To have more chances of survival in any deadly disease, including breast cancer. It is important to follow a healthy diet, lifestyle and exercise regularly.
