Initially, the tooth is damaged by bacteria that live in the oral cavity, which produce acids as a by-product of vital activity. Acids wash out minerals from the enamel, which disrupts the integrity of the outer layers of the tooth. The beginning of this process is relatively painless, but the lack of treatment leads to tooth loss, which can lead to serious complications.
“Remineralization based on peptides is a safe alternative to modern methods of dentistry,” said lead author Mehmet Sarikaya of the University of Washington in the United States. “Such a method will be simple to apply, in addition, it can be resorted to without the appointment of a doctor.”
The idea of physicians is based on the study of the work of amelogenin – the key to the formation of the enamel of human protein. On its basis, it was possible to create similar compounds that stimulate the natural mineralization of the dental tissues – they have become a key component of the development. The authors proved that these proteins attach to the surface of the teeth and attach calcium and phosphate ions.
At the moment, after one application, the enamel gain is between 10 and 50 micrometers. After completion of the work, the authors hope to include such proteins in the composition of toothpastes, gels, solutions created for personal use and for use in the public health system.
