The rejection of meat in children can be dangerous, say the doctors.
About what vegetarianism than it can be helpful or harmful to the body, said Antonina Starodubova, chief nutritionist for the health Department of the city of Moscow:
“At the moment, the opinions of experts about vegetarianism diametrically opposed. On the one hand, there are large regions where the culture of vegetarianism has evolved over the millennia. The characteristics of these regions are warm climate, a wide variety of plant food sources, including high protein content. In such developed the family tradition of vegetarianism, a rich variety of dishes, recipes are passed down from generation to generation. There are some scientific studies that demonstrate the classic relationship of vegetarianism with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
On the other hand, vegetarianism is a type of restrictive type of diet. It is quite difficult to provide the body with all nutrients, especially protein and vitamins, especially if to speak about the stricter types of vegetarianism, different from the classic lacto-ovo-vegetarianism. When the classic lacto-ovo-vegetarianism along with herbal products in the food you can eat eggs and dairy, dairy products. With more stringent options these products are eliminated from the diet, and in some cases restrictions are more stringent. Unbalanced, ill-considered, unhealthy diet is always negatively affects health and can lead to anemia, exacerbation of gastritis and gastric ulcer and other problems of the gastrointestinal tract, lack of muscle mass, weakness, fatigue, low immunity and many other health problems”.
The expert believes that vegetarianism can be dangerous in childhood. Proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals are vital for normal growth and development. “The more restrictions, the more difficult to provide adequate diet and malnutrition associated with catastrophic risks to the child’s health now and in the future. Experts strongly against vegetarianism in childhood. From an early age children should be taught to a full healthy diet, eating enough vegetables and fruit, to know what foods should be eaten daily and which ones to restrict and to teach how to make wise food choices from a position of optimal nutrition. In the child’s diet must be foods – sources of complete protein, which include milk and milk products, eggs, meat, poultry, fish, etc.” — sure Starodubova.
The decision to become a vegetarian should be balanced and deliberate act of an adult. “It’s not just the rejection of meat and fish, as it is often perceived by ordinary people. In order for the new diet had on the health of only a positive effect, the diet should be balanced and optimal, professionally designed by a dietician for a specific individual based on his health status, individual needs, lifestyle, mode of physical activity”, — concluded the expert.
